Ultrasound plays an important role in assessing various diseases in elderly patients because:
No risk of ionizing radiation.
Readily available
No need to inject IV contrast injection (which is needed in CT scan), hence USG is safe in patients with renal impairment / damaged kidneys.
Important to screen for conditions associated with old age such as prostate enlargement, urinary problems, uterine pathologies, problems a/w obesity, age related chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, diabetes etc.
No need for sedation
Guiding diagnostic procedures such as FNACs or Biopsies of suspected masses.
Colour Doppler study allows non-invasive assessment of blood vessels which supply brain, upper and lower limbs and kidneys to detect thickening of vessels caused by atherosclerosis, clot in blood vessels, narrowing etc.
So no risk of allergic reactions associated with IV contrast administration,
no ionizing radiation and
safe in patients with renal damage.
In contrast to MRI Angiography, Colour Doppler is cheap, easily done, quick, high resolution, real-time assessment, allows plaque characterization and grading of stenosis.
We offer various ultrasound and colour Doppler examinations to address clinical problems in elderly patients:
Routine USG Abdomen
USG Pelvis – study of urinary bladder, prostate in males and uterus & ovaries in females.
USG KUB – study of kidneys, ureters and bladder
TRUS (Transrectal sonography) – allows detailed study of prostate and helps in guiding biopsies in suspected patients with prostate cancer
TVS (Transvaginal sonography) – allows detailed study of female reproductive organs, uterus and ovaries.
USG Chest
Colour Doppler examination-
Neck arteries which supply brain (routine screening in diabetic, hypertensive patients, in patients with
paralysis, transient loss of vision, syncope, etc.)
