Vascular Imaging or Colour Doppler

Vascular ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate and take pictures of the blood vessels, helps to identify blockages in the arteries and veins and detect blood clots. A Doppler ultrasound study – a technique that evaluates blood flow through a blood vessel – is usually part of this exam.

When vascular ultrasound / Colour Doppler study is required ?

Arm / hand / Leg Doppler is commonly advised when you have

Cramping pain in leg / hand
Swelling over leg / hand
Tingling numbness / cold hand / feet

Abdominal Doppler is usually advised when you have:

Swelling / palpable lump in abdomen
Enlarged liver / spleen
Uncontrolled hypertension
Blood in vomiting / blood in stools
Alcoholic liver diseases
Cramping pain in tummy after meals
Suspected renal problems etc.

Carotid Doppler is usually advised, when your doctor suspects any of the following:

Recurrent giddiness / syncope
Transient loss of vision
Paralysis / stroke / cerebro-vascular event
Long-standing hypertension / diabetes mellitus / heart disease
Increased blood cholesterol levels etc.
Prior to coronary artery Bypass operation
To look for congenital vascular malformations particularly in children

Scrotal Doppler is advised in patients with severe pain in testicles.

Safe, painless, non-invasive
No need to inject contrast media (as needed in CT scan and sometimes MRI)
No ionizing radiation.
No known harmful effects
Provides images of soft tissues that don’t show up on x-ray images
Less expensive than other modalities

Drawbacks are:

Not all the blood vessels are accessible to vascular ultrasound imaging, Eg. Intracranial vessels.
Extreme obesity, abdominal excessive gas may hamper visualization of intrabdominal vessels.
